Students used GPS units to map the location of the school walking trail then overlaid their track onto an area image.(See map below) They also wrote paragraphs about the different ecosystems within the school forest. When the laser engraver is working properly we will get those signs created and then placed in the school forest. Along with using GPS units students also did a land navigation challenge with only a compass where they had to find their way back to an original location.
Students also surveyed the stream in the school forest for aquatic invertebrates. They then identified and pinned specimens of the invertebrates they found. (See pictures below) They also learned to identify common tree species in our area and took an inventory of the tree types within the school forest. They became more comfortable using a dichotomous key during this process and can now ID most trees and aquatic invertebrates. Lastly, they got to make fishing poles this week. So far Hayden and Casey both have finished theirs and they turned out quite nice. (Photos Below)
